The Case for Doing
Absolutely Nothing.
(And why you’re probably not a bad sleeper — you’re just under-recovered.)

I have to be honest with you about something: I am not naturally good at this.
I cook elaborate meals most nights. I’ve been slowly renovating my house into something that looks like it has opinions. I work hard at my friendships. I work hard at the clinic. I work hard at being fit, eating well, keeping up with continuing education, keeping up with myself. For a long time, I thought this was just who I am, a person who runs at a certain wattage, and that’s fine, and I’ll sleep when I sleep.
What I eventually had to admit was that my sleep had been quietly terrible for years, and it was getting worse, not better, the harder I worked at all of it. Not worse because of the cooking or the house or the relationships in isolation. Worse because I had accidentally turned my entire life into a series of projects, and my nervous system had responded accordingly, by never, fully, actually turning off.
That realization didn’t come easy for someone like me. It might not come easy for you either, if you recognize this particular pattern. But I want to make the case for it (physiologically, philosophically, and practically) because I think it’s one of the most underappreciated health interventions available to any of us, and it costs nothing.
The intervention is doing nothing. Actually nothing. Not productive nothing. Just nothing.
When she came into our clinic here in Boise a while back, she’d already done all these things. Guess how much good it had done her? Zero. Her pain was exactly the same. Not better. Not worse. Just stubbornly, exactly the same, despite a small fortune spent trying to fix her posture.
This is one of the more common scenes in my line of work, and it’s the reason I want to push back on something that’s become almost gospel in the wellness world: that bad posture is the primary villain in most chronic neck and back pain. It’s not that posture is irrelevant. It’s that the posture obsession has crowded out three other factors that matter a lot more, and almost nobody talks about them.
The Monks Who Changed Medicine by
Sitting Still
Here’s something worth sitting with for a minute.
The people who developed Qigong, who mapped the meridian system, who built the theoretical foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine over thousands of years, they were Daoist monks living in remote mountain ranges in China, largely removed from the demands of ordinary social and economic life. They had, by modern standards, extraordinarily unscheduled days. They watched how the breeze moved through trees. They sat with the rhythm of birdsong. They paid attention to how the body felt from the inside with a degree of patience and stillness that is almost incomprehensible from where most of us are standing.
And from that stillness (from that sustained, purposeful doing of nothing) came some of the most sophisticated and enduring medical knowledge in human history. The acupuncture system that we now have thousands of clinical studies on. Herbal formulations that pharmacologists are still mining for compounds. A map of the body’s functional relationships that Western medicine is only now beginning to catch up to through its own methods.
I think about this a lot when a patient tells me they don’t have time to rest. Because the people who gave us this entire system of medicine discovered it specifically by having time to rest. The stillness wasn’t incidental to the insight. It was the method.
What Your Body Is Actually Doing
When You Sleep
Most people understand sleep as the absence of wakefulness. You close your eyes, you lose consciousness, and you wake up hopefully refreshed. What’s less commonly understood is just how much active, metabolically expensive, physiologically critical work is happening in your body during those hours, and how dependent all of that work is on conditions that most of us are not consistently providing.
During deep sleep, your glymphatic system, the brain’s waste clearance network, becomes ten times more active than it is during waking hours, flushing out metabolic byproducts including the proteins associated with neurodegeneration. Your pituitary gland releases the majority of your daily growth hormone, which repairs muscle tissue, consolidates bone density, and governs cellular recovery across virtually every system in the body. Your immune system runs its most sophisticated maintenance routines. Your hippocampus transfers the day’s learning into long-term memory storage.
None of this is passive. All of it requires that your body has actually shifted into a deep parasympathetic state, one where the autonomic nervous system has genuinely handed the controls over to the rest-and-repair branch, not just dimmed the lights a little while remaining partially on standby.
Here is the problem for people who are chronically over-extended: that handoff doesn’t happen automatically just because you’ve been in bed for eight hours. It happens when your nervous system has had enough genuine downtime during the waking day to actually complete the transition at night. A nervous system that has been on from the moment you woke up (meetings, decisions, stimulation, productivity, social demands, even well-intentioned demands like a hard workout or an intellectually demanding book right before bed) is a nervous system that carries its tone into sleep with it. The eight hours happen. The recovery doesn’t, or at least not fully.
This is what we mean by under-recovered. It’s not a sleep quantity problem. It’s a nervous system state problem that sleep alone cannot solve if the conditions that generate it are running all day every day.
Heart Rate Variability and
the Thing Your Fitness Tracker Is Actually Measuring
If you wear any kind of fitness tracker that gives you a recovery or readiness score, you’ve probably seen it fluctuate in ways that don’t perfectly track with how many hours you slept. A night of seven hours might score you higher than a night of nine, and you’ve wondered why. What it’s measuring, underneath the various proprietary formulations, is largely heart rate variability, and HRV is one of the most telling physiological markers of genuine recovery we have.
Heart rate variability measures the variation in time between your heartbeats. Counter-intuitively, more variation is better. A heart that beats with some irregularity in the intervals is a heart whose autonomic nervous system is actively and responsively regulating it, shifting fluidly between sympathetic and parasympathetic influence. A heart that beats with metronomic regularity is one where the nervous system has essentially locked into a single state, usually sympathetic dominance, and lost its flexibility.
Chronic over-extension (too much demand, not enough genuine rest) suppresses HRV over time. What’s interesting is that the things that restore it are not, primarily, more sleep. They are genuinely low-stimulation, undemanding, non-goal-directed activities: slow walks, particularly in natural environments. Sitting quietly. Breathing without trying to optimize your breathing. Doing something you love with no outcome attached to it. The nervous system recovers its flexibility not by being unconscious but by being given extended periods where nothing is being asked of it.
This is why I eventually noticed that the nights I slept best were rarely the nights after my most productive days. They were the nights after days that had some actual spaciousness in them. Days where I’d taken a walk without a destination or a podcast. Where I’d cooked dinner because I wanted to and not because it was on the list. Where I’d sat outside for twenty minutes and done genuinely, completely nothing.
The Modern Glorification
of Tired
Almost every adult patient we see at our clinic is too busy. Not in a complaining way; it’s just where they’re at. They’ve just normalized a level of output and stimulation that would have been unrecognizable to most humans throughout most of history, and they’re running it indefinitely, and they’re surprised that their bodies are struggling.
We’ve built a culture that has somehow convinced itself that productivity is the natural state of a human being and rest is what you do when you’ve earned it or run out of options. The person who does nothing on a Saturday afternoon feels vaguely guilty about it. The person who fills every hour feels vaguely virtuous, even if they’re exhausted and their sleep is terrible and they haven’t felt genuinely restored in months.
It is, when you look at it plainly, a little insane.
Here’s the thing that I find interesting from a purely practical standpoint: it is genuinely harder to do nothing than to do something. Try sitting in your backyard for thirty minutes with no phone, no podcast, no task, no agenda, and see how long it takes before your brain starts generating reasons you should be doing something else. Most people make it about four minutes. The restlessness itself is information. It’s your nervous system, so habituated to stimulation and output, protesting the withdrawal.
But that restlessness is exactly what you’re trying to work through. On the other side of it is the state your body has been waiting for permission to enter.
What This Actually
Looks Like
I want to be concrete, because “do nothing” is easy to say and oddly hard to implement when you’ve spent years optimizing every hour.
It doesn’t mean being sedentary. Slow walks count, especially outside, especially without a destination or a performance metric. It means doing things you genuinely enjoy without attaching any outcome to them. Reading something that has nothing to do with self-improvement. Cooking for the pleasure of it rather than the nutrition of it. Sitting with a cup of something warm and just sitting. It means, occasionally, saying no to the thing that would fill the evening, not because you’re tired but because the empty evening is the point.
It also means reconsidering what sleep hygiene actually is. The standard advice (no screens, consistent bedtime, keep the room cool) is all reasonable and largely correct. But sleep hygiene that’s implemented as another productivity system, another checklist to execute perfectly, can itself become a source of low-grade pressure that keeps your nervous system activated right up until the moment it’s supposed to shut down. The goal isn’t to perform sleep correctly. It’s to create the conditions where your nervous system feels genuinely safe enough to let go.
For me, that’s taken conscious practice. I have to actively choose the unscheduled afternoon. I have to remind myself that the house renovation will survive a weekend where I don’t touch it. I have to let a weeknight be quiet without filling it. None of this is natural for me. But I sleep better than I have in years, and I’m a more present practitioner, a better cook, and honestly a better friend because of it.
Your nervous system doesn’t need more optimization. It needs more permission.
None of this means posture is meaningless. It’s one input among several, and probably not the loudest one for most chronic cases. The loudest one, more often than people expect, is the state your nervous system has been quietly running in for months or years, dictating muscle tone, circulation, and breath mechanics in the background the entire time you were adjusting your monitor height.
